Is My Car Ready to Tune? Pre-Tune Checklist
Is My Car Ready to Tune?
A tune amplifies what is already there. If the engine has underlying issues, tuning will not fix them it will make them more apparent. Work through this checklist before booking. It takes 10 minutes and could save you a lot of headaches.
Cooling System
- No unexplained coolant loss over the past month
- Coolant is clean not murky, brown, or oily
- No sweet smell from the engine bay or exhaust
- Temperature gauge sits stable at normal operating temperature
- No white smoke on startup or under load
Engine Health
- No warning lights currently on
- Starts cleanly no extended cranking, no smoke on cold start
- Idles smoothly no hunting, no rough running
- No visible oil leaks (check under the car after it has been parked overnight)
- Oil is clean not milky, not black and gritty, not low
Fuel System
- No hesitation under hard acceleration
- No smoke at wide-open throttle (a small puff on a cold pull is normal; sustained black smoke under load is not)
- No fuel smell in the cabin or engine bay
- Last fuel filter change within the service interval (diesel injectors are sensitive to dirty fuel)
Turbocharger
- Boost builds normally no flat spot between 1500 and 2500rpm
- No whistling, whining, or rattling from the turbo area
- No oil consumption (blue smoke on overrun indicates turbo seal wear)
- No limp mode events in the past 6 months
Emissions Systems (DPF / EGR)
- No active DPF warning light
- Car regularly gets a 20+ minute highway drive to allow DPF regeneration
- No history of incomplete regen cycles or repeated DPF cleaning
- EGR has not been flagged by a scan tool in recent history
Service History
- Timing belt (if applicable) is within interval check your specific model
- Oil and filter changed within the last 10,000km or 12 months
- No outstanding recalls or known software issues
