How to Install Wheel Spacers — Thread Engagement, Torque Specs, and Why Re-Torque Isn't Optional
Installing wheel spacers is straightforward, but there are a few things that matter enough to do right. Get these correct and a spacer install is a non-event. Miss them and you'll be chasing problems that shouldn't exist.
Always follow the installation instructions and torque specifications provided by your spacer manufacturer for your specific product. The guidance below is general in nature — your manufacturer's specs take precedence.
What You Need
- Torque wrench (capable of your stud's torque spec — typically in the 100–140 ft-lb range for M14 studs, but verify with your manufacturer)
- Wire brush or thread chaser for cleaning hub and stud threads
- Threadlocker (medium strength, e.g., Loctite 243 or equivalent) for the spacer-to-hub studs
- Penetrating oil if the hub face has any surface rust
- Torque stick or breaker bar for initial loosening
Step 1: Clean the Hub Face and Studs
The hub face needs to be clean, flat, and free of rust, dirt, and old wheel weight adhesive. Any debris between the spacer and hub face creates a gap that will allow the spacer to move under load, and movement causes loosening.
Run a wire brush over the hub face and over the stud threads. If there's significant surface rust, a light pass with a wire wheel on a drill handles it quickly. You want metal-on-metal contact across the entire mating surface.
Step 2: Check Thread Engagement
Before installing, understand how much thread engagement you'll have on both sets of fasteners:
Spacer onto hub studs: The spacer's nut or threaded bore needs to engage enough thread on your existing hub studs. The minimum standard is one full stud diameter's worth of thread engagement — for an M14 stud, that's at least 14mm of thread contact. If your hub studs are short and the spacer is thick, you may need extended studs. Check this before you start.
Wheel onto spacer studs: Same rule applies to the wheel lug nuts on the spacer's studs. The spacer's studs need to protrude enough through the wheel's lug holes to get adequate engagement on the lug nut. Your spacer manufacturer will specify the correct stud length for your application.
Step 3: Apply Threadlocker to Spacer-to-Hub Interface
Apply a small amount of medium-strength threadlocker to the hub stud threads before threading the spacer on. This isn't about preventing the spacer from ever coming off — medium strength threadlocker releases with normal hand tools. It's about preventing vibration-induced loosening during the re-torque interval before the mating surfaces fully seat.
Do not use threadlocker on the wheel lug nuts. Those need to come off for tire rotation and service.
Step 4: Install the Spacer, Torque in a Star Pattern
Thread the spacer onto the hub studs by hand until it's snug against the hub face, then torque to your manufacturer's specification in a star (cross) pattern — not in a circle. Torquing in a circle loads one side of the spacer before the other seats, which can cause slight misalignment.
A typical torque value for M14x1.5 hub studs is in the range of 120–140 ft-lbs, but confirm this with your specific product's documentation. Different stud sizes and materials have different specifications.
Step 5: Mount the Wheel, Torque to Spec
Mount your wheel on the spacer's studs and torque to your wheel's lug nut specification — this is your vehicle's OEM lug torque spec, typically found in your owner's manual. Again, star pattern.
Step 6: Re-Torque After 50–100km — This Is Not Optional
Drive 50 to 100 kilometres, then re-check and re-torque both the spacer-to-hub fasteners and the wheel lug nuts to their full spec. The mating surfaces between the spacer, hub face, and wheel settle slightly under initial load. Without re-torque, you may find the fasteners have relaxed from their initial value.
This is standard practice for any wheel component installation. It's not a sign of a bad product — it's just how metal-to-metal mating surfaces behave.
Common Mistakes
Skipping the re-torque. The most common one. Install feels solid, truck drives fine, re-torque gets forgotten. Check it.
Not cleaning the hub face. Rust or debris under the spacer creates high spots. The spacer rocks slightly on those spots under load, and fasteners loosen over time.
Wrong lug nuts on the wheel. Spacer studs may be a different thread pitch or seat angle than your OEM studs. Use the lug nuts specified for your spacer and wheel combination — don't assume your factory lug nuts work on aftermarket studs.
Insufficient thread engagement. If the stud doesn't protrude far enough, the lug nut bottoms out before clamping the wheel. This is a structural failure waiting to happen. Verify engagement length before driving.
